GLEN ROCK, N.J. — When they opened their own shop to sell Irish memorabilia from their grandparents' homeland, Kristin and Michael McGowan took their name from a landmark that gave their hometown its name.
The borough couple named it Carrick Mor — “big rock” — after the famous boulder just down Rock Road.
“We love our town,” Kristin McGowan said. “That’s why we wanted to have [Carrick Mor] here.”
Open late on Wednesdays, the shop carries Irish imports, including some never sold before in America.
“We try to have traditional things that people expect but we made a point to find artists and artisans who people wouldn’t expect to find,” McGowan said.
Carrick Mor’s selections are not “stereotypically Irish or covered in shamrocks,” McGowan said. “The different soaps and textiles are not what you’d expect to see at first glance.
"We hope it appeals to everyone, even those who aren’t Irish.”
