FAIR LAWN, N.J. ---At the ripe young age of 17, Fair Lawn resident Matthew Aversa, knowing he had an interest in social media marketing, started his own firm, ME Management. He said he worked three to four hours a day, mostly right after the school bell rang, making cold calls and emailing people asking if he could represent them.
He said at the time there were no firms focusing on the social media space and he knew, with his communications skills and knowledge of the online world, he could make some inroads. So, with his parent's encouragement, not to mention a lot of research on the public relations world, he hung out his shingle.
By age 18, he had signed close to 15 full time clients, a host of them media personalities. Among them was Comedian Carey Reilly who, during a meeting a few years later said: “Well, you're 21 now, why not re-name your company to Twenty One PR. That way when you’re not Twenty One at least it's your strategy for the 21st century.”
Now, Twenty One PR, based in Fair Lawn where Aversa grew up, has more than 35 clients, including a second office in San Antonio, TX. "I have family in Texas which made it a great opportunity to gain some presence down there as there's a boom in new businesses opening between San Antonio, Austin, and Houston," he said.
And, he's not done expanding. Aversa has his sights on Los Angeles where he already has a solid client base.
His company's main focuses are celebrities, media experts, hotels and liquor/spirit companies. "I have the pleasure of working with Jedediah Bila (FOX News Host, Red Eye, Outnumbered) Kevin Thompson (Mr. Moviefone) Lauren Makk (Co-Host of the FABLife on ABC), The Grafton Hotel on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, and Ms. New York, among others," he said.
He added that being so young -- he's 22 now -- means a lot of times attending events or red carpets he is often thought of as the assistant or friend as opposed to being the CEO and Founder of a PR business.
"It’s a great conversation starter when I hand over my business card and get, 'Wait? How old are you?'" he said. " It's one of my favorite questions to answer."
