The program, hosted by Gelbwasser, a local author, is part of the One Book, One Community event for the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey. The focus is delving into the stories of young Jewish children coming to America.

The free event is from 10 a.m. to noon at Fair Lawn Jewish Center/ Congregation B'nai Israel, 10-10 Norma Ave., Fair Lawn. Parents are encouraged to bring their teens. Refreshments will be served.

"A Backpack, A Bear, and Eight Crates of Vodka" is a memoir of Golinkin’s personal story of fleeing Ukraine with his family when he was 9 and building a life in America.

Gelbwasser’s book offers a look at 15-year-old Alyssa Bondar’s conflict between her Russian-Jewish culture and her new American one.
