GLEN ROCK, N.J. -- The Community Church of Glen Rock will present a special parenting class, “How To Talk So Children Will Listen, How To Listen So Children Will Talk,” at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, shortly after the church service.
The free program, which will be in the educational building of the church, 354 Rock Road, is open to anyone. Access to the facility is off Hamilton Avenue.
William Lutz, a licensed marriage and family therapist in New Jersey, whose specialty has been children and youth, will lead the program. He has been on the staff of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City since 2003 as minister of pastoral care with a focus on families, youth and children.
An ordained minister of the United Church of Christ, Lutz received his training at three of the most prestigious institutions in his field: a three-year clinical residence at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute, New York, a doctorate of adolescent development, Andover-Newton Theological School and a post-doctorate fellowship in family life at the Erickson Center at Harvard Medical School.
He was the founder and executive director of the Montclair Counseling Center, where for 28 years (1972-2000) he worked with families, youth and children, including serving as a consultant to four nursery schools and one private school.
A resident of Montclair, Lutz and his wife, Judy, have two married sons and seven grandchildren. Lutz makes the point that he has learned more about kids from his own children and grandchildren than from his academic training, emphasizing how important it is to listen, love and present.
