Joseph Yuskaitis Jr., an Army veteran, underwent three difficult surgeries and will undergo rehabilitation over the next two months, longtime friend Cathy Schofield said.

Yuskaitis is taking time off from his job at Fair Lawn Memorial Cemetery, where he works for Schofield's husband, Charlie Schofield.

"I’ve watched Joseph grow up," she said. "He is a hard worker, a dedicated and loyal person."

Yuskaitis began as an athlete in the Fair Lawn Junior Wrestling program when he was 5 years old. He continued to volunteer after his own wrestling practice and during college breaks.

"He has no vested interest other than the sport," said Rick Puerto, citing Yuskaitis' passion and reliability as two of many attributes. "He has no kids... but he wanted to be with the young guys — he wanted to build the program from the 1st and 2nd year wrestlers."

Yuskaitis asked Puerto if he could be the official head coach as soon as he finished college, the director said.

"He became my head coach right off the bat," Puerto said. "There is no one else I would want."

JJ's Pub and Grill, Railyard Tavern, The Dutch House Tavern and Giovanni's are providing food for the 7 p.m. event at the Fair Lawn Knights of Columbus Hall at 16-16 Maple Ave.

Tickets are $45 per person.
