FAIR LAWN, N.J. – The Empress Diner this summer celebrated its 50th anniversary.
“The best thing about a family owned place is that everything is made from scratch and from the heart," said owner John Melissas, who opened the River Road eatery in 1965.
The Empress has seen its share of changes over the years, beginning in 2000 when it underwent a complete interior and exterior remodeling. The diner last year introduced online ordering and delivery.
“It took a good five or six months to take off," said Sean, a diner employee, of the online services. "Now it’s great!”
The new services allow the diner to cater to more local businesses and the general public in Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hawthorne and Elmwood Park.
The Empress' cheesecake recipe, however, will always remain the same.
