Community Supports Glen Rock Boy Battling Leukemia

GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Residents from Glen Rock and beyond have raised more than $35,000 for the borough's Elissa Canfield and her 6-year-old son, Dylan, who is battling leukemia.

Family friend Marissa Olsen set an $8,000 donations goal on GoFundMe on Aug. 10 and saw more than $12,000 come in by the end of the day.

And it's kept on coming.

Canfield, who lost her husband to lung cancer five years ago, "is a single mom who works full time, and these things require time away from work,” Olsen said. “She’s one of the toughest people I know, but she’s also a sensitive and warm mom."

Canfield early last month noticed her son was becoming lethargic and showing a lack of interest toward sports and most other things he’s passionate about, Olsen said.

“It’s sort of ironic because Dylan is the most full-of-life kid you could meet,” Olsen said. “It’s ironic that he would be a kid to get sick.”

Friends, family and supporters have held bake sales and lemonade stands to raise money for the Canfields. A larger, borough-wide event is being planned for the fall, Olsen said.

“Elissa is beyond touched by not only the financial generosity of the community but the outpouring of generosity of spirit and thoughtfulness from people she doesn’t even know," she said.

Tough times don’t last, but tough people do, Olsen said.

For that reason, she said, the Canfields will.
