GLEN ROCK, N.J. — When Glen Rock yoga instructor Sheryl Edsall heard about a 7-year-old girl suffering from migraines, she looked to help her both physically and spiritually.
Edsall, owner of Naturally Yoga, gave the girl a full scholarship after the Social Service Association of Ridgewood made the connection.
With treatments so costly, a physician suggested the family try yoga. Edsall said she was happy to help.
"I used to have migraines as a kid and once I started practicing yoga they were gone," she told Daily Voice. "I definitely know yoga helps, plus eating in a way that's good for your body and breathing practices. It's a whole lifestyle we're looking at."
The girl started her lessons in October and seemed to enjoy it from the start, Edsall said.
Participating in yoga during a full-blown migraine may not help, but it can work as a preventive measure, she said.
Nancy LaMotta Dreszler of the Ridgewood social service agency expected a partial scholarship for the girl but the Glen Rock studio took it a step further.
"We were really impressed that they were so optimistic," Deszler said, "and really excited about helping her."
