James J. Caramanna, 90, Of Fair Lawn

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- James J. Caramanna, of Fair Lawn, died Monday, Nov. 28. He was 90.

Born and raised in Paterson, he resided in Fair Lawn for 59 years. 

A graduate of Eastside High School, he attended the University of Miami and New York University. He proudly served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. 

A tireless advocate for those suffering from mental illness, he was a member of the Bergen County Mental Health Board, Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Family Care Plus of Paramus. He served as a Scout master of Boy Scout Troop #53 in Radburn during the 1970s. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed jogging, hiking and time spent with family and friends at Wolf Lake in New York. He was an insurance broker and owned and operated The James Agency in Fair Lawn since 1963.

He is survived by his wife, Jane M. (Shortway) Caramanna; children, Peter Caramanna and wife Felicity, Susan Devine and companion James Romaglio and the late James Caramanna III; and grandchildren, Noelle Caramanna and Julie Devine. 

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn. A funeral service is planned for 9:45 a.m. Saturday at The Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 1-36 30th St., Fair Lawn. Interment will follow at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa.
