FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Marie Margaret (McSweeney) McKenna -- a Newark, Delaware, resident, formerly of Fair Lawn -- died on Monday, April 25. She was 86.
Born in Burlington, Vermont, McKenna graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, in Riverdale, New York, with a bachelor's of arts degree. She earned a master's degree in social work from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.. She enjoyed a full career in the Hackensack School District as a social worker until she retired, in 1990.
McKenna is survived by her children, Patrick McKenna, William McKenna, Susan McKenna and Eileen Thornton; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; sisters Ruth Ann Pichler, Katherine Morrissey, Elizabeth Gretkowski and Martha Economou; sisters-in-law Dr. Anne Fletcher and Marilyn McSweeney; and brother-in-law Edward Barry.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward McKenna; parents, Dr. E. Douglas McSweeney and Ruth (Casey) McSweeney; and siblings Dr. E. Douglas McSweeney, Dr. William McSweeney, Rev. Monsignor John McSweeney, Margaret Barry and Louise Scibelli.
Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 29, at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Rd., in Fair Lawn. A mass will be celebrated on at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of Saint Anne, 15-05 Saint Anne St., in Fair Lawn. Following the funeral mass, family members will attend the burial at the George Washington Memorial Park, 234 Paramus Rd., in Paramus.
