FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- The Fair Lawn Fire Company No. 3 participated in bail-out training at the Bergen County Fire Academy on Monday, April 18.
"A bail out bag is a harness/rope system that allows firefighters to quickly evacuate from an upper floor if needed," a Tuesday department Facebook post noted, including video from the training.
This system was purchased as a result of the famous Black Sunday fire that claimed the lives of three New York City firefighters back in 2005. All of Fair Lawn's interior firefighters have this system and must re-qualify on it annually. What you see on this video is some of our members bailing out of a floor and lowering themselves. Don't underestimate the difficultly involved here. In addition, it is just not normal to go out of window head first as you see here.
