YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 61-year-old deliveryman who spoke only Mandarin escaped injury when he hit the gas — sending his car bouncing off three others — after a trio of teens tried to rob him, Saddle Brook Deputy Police Chief Robert White said this afternoon.
Officers responding to calls from Alberta Drive residents about the smash-ups on their street around 10 o’clock last night were met by the victim and his 17-year-old son, who was a passenger in the 2010 Toyota and explained what happened, White told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
His father, who lives in Jersey City, was delivering a telephone order of alcohol and soda for Nice Food of Palisade Avenue in Garfield when the three robbers tried to give him counterfeit cash for the booze, the younger man said.
When he gave it back to them, White said, one of the robbers pulled out a small handgun and hit the older man in the head.
“At that moment, [he] stepped on the accelerator in an attempt to flee … and crashed his car into the 3 nearby parked vehicles on the roadway, causing minimal damage,” the deputy chief said.
Fair Lawn and Bergen County Police, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, assisted the search for the teens, he said.
“We are currently conducting an extensive and thorough investigation of this incident,” White said. “Our primary focus is finding the suspects responsible for committing an attempted armed robbery.”
He added, however, that his department is “also concerned about the ability of persons to order and buy alcohol by mobile delivery service in our community”
