Fair Lawn man, 81, gets five years in prison for kiddie porn

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: An 81-year-old Fair Lawn man was sentenced to five years behind bars today for downloading what he knew were images and videos of children being sexually abused.

In addition to the prison term, before U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden – who issued the sentence in federal court in Newark – ordered Joseph Amari to undergo five years of supervised release.

Amari, a widower already serving time in state prison for child endangerment, admitted to Hayden in March that he received images and videos of sexual abuse against children.

His federal sentence will run concurrent with his state prison term, which began in March, 2012. That means he could be out before he turns 85.

He must register as a sex offender when that time comes.

For now, Amari will remain in state prison. If he is granted parole next May, he will be transferred to federal custody.

Under terms of a plea bargain with federal prosecutors, Amari must serve just about all of the five-year sentence. There is no parole in the federal system ( SEE: Fair Lawn convict, 81, gets at least 5 years for child porn ).

Amari admitted that he used peer-to-peer file-sharing software to download images and videos in February 2007 of children being sexually abused.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force with the investigation leading to today’s plea, secured by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jane H. Yoon and Shirley U. Emehelu of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark. He also thanked the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and Fair Lawn Police Department.
