Fair Lawn Police Bust Accused Package Thief With Resident's Help

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Thanks to an alert resident, Fair Lawn police nabbed a package thief who ordered a new phone and had it sent to an unknowing victim's home, authorities said.

The resident told police the thief snatched the package off a Pollitt Drive porch, then got into a maroon Honda and drove off, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Detective Mark Wyka later tracked down and arrested 36-year-old Melvin Gomez-Peralta of Paterson, who Metzler said admitting taking the package containing a Samsung Galaxy S8+ valued at $840.

He was charged with theft and released, pending after he admitted to taking the package. He was released after being charged with theft.
