FAIR LAWN, N.J.– Two Fair Lawn police officers were promoted, while another joined the force this week.
Eric Leitman, 37, was promoted to lieutenant. He is a 1997 graduate of Fair Lawn High School who joined the department in 2004.
"He's been an asset to our department for his whole career," said Fair Lawn Police Chief Glen Cauwels. "I can't wait for him to lead the platoon like I know he could."
New Sgt. Joseph Mecionis, 46, was also sworn.
Mecionis, a 1987 graduate of Bergen County Academies, specializes as a firearms officer for the department. He joined in 1999 after working as a state corrections officer.
"I've known him for a long time. There's no doubt in my mind that he's going to do a good job," said Cauwels. "This is basically just the changing of the badge for him. He's a leader."
Mecionis is a chemical agent operator with the Bergen County Rapid Deployment Force and an electrician with IBEW Local #64.
Javier Gutierrez, 38, is the department's newest hire after working in Paterson for 13 years.
Gutierrez, who graduated from Passaic County Technical Institute, will be assigned to the patrol division.
"We grabbed him on a lateral transfer," Cauwels said before the ceremony. "I have to let you in on a little secret: We swore him in two weeks ago. He's been working, but we're going to have an official swearing in."
