YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A man was struck and killed by a commuter train in Fair Lawn at the border of Elmwood Park this afternoon in an apparent suicide — the 21st such fatality for NJ Transit this year.
No passengers were aboard the Hoboken-bound Bergen line train when the 33-year-old Fair Lawn man stepped into its path just east of the Broadway station and was struck just after 1:40 p.m., NJ Transit spokesman William Smith told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
Traffic was suspended between the Plauderville station in Garfield and Ridgewood for about an hour and 15 minutes before being restored.
Bergen County has had nearly a third of the total suicides by train for NJ Transit, officials said.
