The trio -- a 53-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl -- said the robbers approached them as they walked on Harristown Road near Heights Avenue around 11:40 p.m.

One was black, about six feet tall, wearing black pants and a black sweatshirt and holding a black handgun, they told police, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

They described the other as Hispanic or black, short, wearing a baseball cap with the letter ‘A’ in red on the front.

After the robbers demanded the man's iPhone, the shorter one pulled out a pocket knife and used it to cut the strap from the woman's purse, the trio told police.

Both ran off with the phone and the purse, they said.

Anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to call Detective Karen Censullo at (201) 794-5410.
