Fort Lee Police Dog Finds Drugs In Speeding, Tailgating, Cellphone Stop

FORT LEE, N.J. -- A Fort Lee police dog sniffed out more than two pounds of pot after officers stopped a speeding driver who was tailgating a motorcycle while using his cellphone, authorities said.

Police arrested 32-year-old Demarcus D. Shelborne of Milford, DE, thanks to help from Hudson and his handler, Officer Zack Joseph, Police Chief Keith Bendul said.

Jospeh and Officer Kester Osaigbovo stopped the rented Nissan on southbound Routes 1&9 just after midnight July 30, Bendul said.

Shelborne was doing 80 miles an hour while tailgating a motorcycle and not maintaining a lane -- while using the GPS as he held his cellphone, the chief said.

The officers smelled marijuana from inside the car and immediately put Hudson to work he said.

Joseph and Hudson only just graduated in May from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Detection Course, the chief noted.

Hudson pointed the officers to the Nissan's trunk, where they found the pot and a quarter-pound of psilocybin mushrooms inside a tan bag, Bendul said.

They arrested Shelborne, who was processed and released on a court summons charging he said.

He was released on a court summonses charging him with possession and distribution of both drugs. Shelborne also received several traffic summonses, the chief said.
