"I know he's qualified and I know he's going to lead this department well," Mayor Bruce Packer said. "We're going to continue what is a move in the right direction for our department."

Councilmen Skip Husking and Michael O'Hagan and Councilwoman Kristine Morieko also OK'd the move in the 4-2 vote.

Councilwoman Amy Martin said she reluctantly approved it "for the betterment of this department."

Councilman Arthur Pazan and Councilwoman Mary Jane Surrago voted no. Kazan didn't elaborate, but Surrago said she couldn't look past previous incidents involving Ackermann

Ackermann thanked the governing body and said he'd save his remarks for his swearing in.

Former Police Chief Fred Stahman retired on March 1.

Lt. Daniel Dour remains the commanding officer in charge of the department.
