A bar extending from the train struck the 55-year-old pedestrian, who was taken to a local hospital shortly before 9 p.m., NJ Transit's Lisa Torbic said.

He received summonses for trespassing and interfering with transportation, she said.

The incident occurred a short time after a car became stalled on the same stretch of tracks in Saddle Brook. The 52-year-old driver from Park Ridge got out of the Toyota, which was towed after NJ Transit momentarily stopped area trains.

The car wasn't struck and the driver was fine, Torbic said.

"This was a potential and imminent crash that could have very well led to tragedy," Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler said. "We thank our lucky stars and some power up above that allowed us to avoid it."
