Sgt. Sergeant Damian Priddy stopped the vehicle just after 3 a.m. Sunday on 7th Avenue because its headlights were off, Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik said.

The driver, 30-year-old Javar Williams, stopped at first, then turned right onto East 26th Street before stopping at 6th Avenue, Berdnick said.

Williams then got out, a revolver in his left hand, and ran down a wooded path, the sheriff said.

Priddy chased him down at Grimes Place and 5th Avenue, Berdnick said.

A K-9 unit then helped recover a .44 Magnum Ruger Super Blackhawk revolver loaded with three rounds that was reported stolen out of Hamburg, he said.

Paterson firefighters treated Williams at the scene for cuts he received from falling during the chase. He was later taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for an evaluation, the sheriff said.

Williams remained held on weapons charges Monday in the Passaic County Jail.
