Passaic Pedestrian Struck In Wayne By Clifton Driver's Van Critical

WAYNE, N.J. -- A 62-year-old pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a van Wednesday in Wayne, and police were seeking witnesses.

Ryszard Mieliczek of Passaic was crossing Valley Road from Nellis Drive to Runnymede Drive when he was struck by the Ford Econoline van driven by 58-year-old John Pontes of Clifton just before 11 a.m. Wednesday, LFC Daniel Daniel said Thursday morning.

Pontes, who was turning onto southbound Valley Road from Runnymede Drive at the time, remained at the scene and was issued a summons for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, Daly said.

Mieliczek was conscious when members of the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad took him to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, the lieutenant said.

An investigation was continuing.
