Paterson Shooting Victim, 22, Dies, Gunman Sought

PATERSON, N.J. – The shooting of a 22-year-old Paterson man over the weekend became a homicide when he died overnight Monday at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

As of late Sunday, 13 shootings were reported in the city in a span of a little over three weeks -- increasing this year's total to 53.

Kasiem L. McCaskill, was struck several times at 3:45 a.m. Sunday in the area of Caroll and Harrison streets, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief William Fraher jointly announced Monday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Monday, they said.

Authorities asked that anyone with information that could help identify the shooter contact Paterson police at (973) 321-1111 or Senior Assistant Passaic County Prosecutor Joshua Vazquez at (973) 837-7622.

Valdes and Fraher’s detectives were already investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old city man on North Main Street overnight Friday into Saturday.

Among other things, they were trying to determine whether warfare among rival drug gangs was responsible.
