Jay I. Lazerowitz, 58, continued to receive entrusted funds that he placed into business-type checking accounts even though his license to practice law was suspended in January, acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Thursday.

He also “misapplied entrusted funds by moving and/or utilizing funds outside the terms of the established escrow agreements,” the prosecutor said.

Investigators from Grewal’s White Collar Crimes Unit charged Lazerowitz with unauthorized practice of law and misapplication of entrusted property following an investigation that the prosecutor said was “based on civilian complaints and information received from the New Jersey Office of Attorney Ethics.”

They served him with a complaint at his Harristown Road office late last month, Grewal said.
