FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Two women died and three people were hospitalized, including a police officer who sustained a knee injury when he fell from a roof while rescuing a resident during a fire at a Fair Lawn assisted living home for disabled adults late Monday.

The officer was hurt after he caught his leg in a gutter as he got down from the roof, responders said.

"He said he could see two other victims in a room but he couldn't get back in because of the intensity of the fire," one of them told Daily Voice. Flames blew through the upper story of the Berkshire Road home -- operated by the Alliance Against Homelessness of Bergen County -- just before midnight.

Both fatalities were confirmed less than a half-hour later. By 1:30, the fire was declared under control.

All four women living there were formerly homeless with disabilities and in their 50s and 60s, alliance officials said.

Saddle Brook FAST and Glen Rock firefighters assisted. Elmwood Park and Hawthorne provided mutual aid.

Authorities were trying to determine the cause.
