The team took first and second place, respectively, at recent competitions in Fair Lawn and North Plainfield.

"I am really proud of these kids and where they have taken the program," Director Becca Meeker told Daily Voice.

"This year, the group has come together, and their scores reflect their commitment," said Fair Lawn Friends of Music President Rebecca Graziano.

The Winter Guard will be competing along with 72 other groups this weekend in Monmouth Junction. Fair Lawn will be part of the 10-team Scholastic Novice group.

It will perform its show, "Dream Big," which is about the importance of community and friends in helping people get through difficult times, Graziano said.

It includes dance and students spinning rifles, sabers and flags to tell a story or share an emotion.

There are 11 students– six sophomores, three seniors and two freshmen – on the Winter Guard squad who rehearse 20 hours per week Graziano said.
