GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Poet Richard Blanco will read his work, talk about his life experiences and personal journey to becoming a contemporary poet and conduct a workshop Friday with Glen Rock High School students.

There will be a general assembly from 9:30-10:50 a.m. in the high school auditorium, 400 Hamilton Ave., followed by meetings with art students from 11-11:50 a.m. and a workshop with Language Arts students from noon to 1 p.m.

Blanco is best known for reading his poem "One Today" at President Barack Obama's inauguration in January 2013. He was the youngest poet ever to read at a presidential inauguration. He also was the first Latino, the first immigrant and the first openly gay poet to receive that honor. Blanco became the fifth inaugural poet in U.S. history, following in the footsteps of Robert Frost and Maya Angelou.

He has written several books about his journey through cultural identity and the rising of the human spirit.

His poems celebrate the strength of the American people and the nation’s great diversity.

He has received many awards for his work and numerous honors for his writings and performances.
