Last to walk at the inaugural Thursday ceremony launched by coach John VanSoest were his mother, Nancy VanSoest of Totowa, and aunt, Joan VanSoest of Parsippany, alongside him and his two sons.

"They’re fighters," the coach said of all of the survivors who walked the field, including Fair Lawn mom Bearn Vargas, this year's Santa Boone recipient.

"They deserve to be recognized."
