Friday Smoothie Sale Aids Glen Rock Dog Park

GLEN ROCK, N.J. — There was never any doubt what the topic of choice would be for the Coleman School Girls on the Run athletes regarding a community impact project.

It was the first session in early March when the children's love for dogs became apparent.

The athletes — ranging from grades 3-5 — were asked to share fun facts about themselves and several quickly and excitedly revealed their family owned a dog.

Some started making cheers about dogs at the end of practices. Shirts among the group featuring canines haven't been uncommon, either.

So it came as no surprise to coaches Denise Cinque MacDonald, Erika Goldberg Schwartz and Daily Voice's Cecilia Levine that the group opted for something dog-related for their project, covering an entire poster board with visualizations and ideas on how to best benefit beloved canines.

The team will raise money with a smoothie sale for the Glen Rock Dog Park at the Coleman School on Friday, April 29.

The smoothies will be donated from Smoothie King in Glen Rock, owned by MacDonald, and sold for $3 per drink, starting at 3:45 p.m. on the field by the playground.

The proceeds will be used to purchase a brick for the dog park with the team name on it.

The Glen Rock Dog Park will be developed on unused land behind the Borough Recycling Center on Doremus Avenue, between the Faber sports fields.

It will be dedicated to the 9/11 search and rescue dogs in honor of their dedication in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks.

Under $10,000 has already been raised for the dog park but $75,000 is needed to break ground in the fall, Glen Rock Dog Park Inc., President Eileen Hillock said.

The Girls on the Run fundraiser will lead up to the May 1 “Mutt Madness” kick off.

A different Glen Rock business will have a fundraiser of donate a portion of its proceeds to the dog park for every day in May.
