River Road Hot Bagels In Fair Lawn Vies For Top DVlicious Spot

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- It’s impossible to live here and not have a bagel opinion. The New York area, as everyone knows, is the bagel capital of the world. And yes, it’s worth waiting in line on a Sunday morning to get one of these doughy wonders fresh out of the oven. Toasting, as a bagel purist knows, is not necessary when you buy the very best.

We asked for your favorites and now have five contestants in the running. Each is being profiled this week as part of our ongoing DVlicious contest. Here’s the lowdown on one who made the cut.

River Road Hot Bagels, 13-30 River Road, Fair Lawn, (201) 791-5646

What Makes Them Bagelicious: To paraphrase the old Pillsbury slogan, to River Road aficionados, nothin’ says lovin’ like a bagel fresh out of the oven. River’s ring-shaped bread manages to be hot, crispy, and chewy at the same time. And while it, like every sandwich shop in New Jersey, does a THC SPK (Taylor ham and cheese with salt, pepper and ketchup) on a bagel, River Road does it artfully – layering the pork roll, cheese and egg – instead of serving, as one customer called it, an “overstuffed slop pile.”

Crazy Flavors: River Road sticks to the basics. The specialty of the house -- pumpernickel with onion -- never has any problems flying off the shelves and into people's mouths.

Reminder: The contest ends Monday, April 25 at 5 p.m. You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day.
