FAIR LAWN, N.J. – Joan (Kozak) Yacenko, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 11.
She was born June 10, 1934, in Passaic. She married her late husband, Michael Yacenko, April 19, 1958, and moved with him in 1971 to their home in Fair Lawn, where she remained for the rest of her life as a homemaker. It was there that she devoted her time to spoiling her cats, feeding “the outside guys” (any bird, chipmunk, squirrel or other animal that made its way across her back patio) and maintaining her yard and flowerbeds.
Special times were spent with her family going to the mountains, playing cards and charades and watching TV. She also enjoyed fishing, bowling in the local senior league and visiting Atlantic City. She regularly donated to a variety of charities, most prominently her preparations of shoe box gifts for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse.
She was a parishioner of St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Elmwood Park.
She is survived by her son, Michael Yacenko; daughter Eileen Yacenko-Devens; son in law Rich Devens; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
There will be a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Leo’s Roman Catholic Church in Elmwood Park, with the interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Cemetery in Paramus.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-3000.
