The ARC Community Services of Bergen & Passaic Counties van was coming from a medical business nearby when it struck the corner house at Zink Place and 17th Street around 10:15 a.m., pushing the front wall in, Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
"The impact lifted the back end of the van to the side, leaving the vehicle stuck between the residence and a telephone pole," he said.
The 28-year-old driver from Hackensack told police "she became confused after pulling out of the rear parking lot of 17-03 Broadway whether she should drive left or right and proceeded to drive straight into the residence," the sergeant said.
She and an aide -- a 27-year-old Paterson woman who was sitting up front -- were both taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with head and neck injuries, Metzler said.
Two special need adults were removed from the van by the Fair Lawn Heavy Rescue Squad.
The Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corps took one to HUMC with an arm injury and the other to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson with a hip injury.
"Nobody was at home at the time," Metzler said. "The residence has been deemed uninhabitable by the Borough of Fair Lawn building inspector but is not in danger of collapse."
