GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Glen Rock schoolteacher Jennifer Burke was in for a surprise when she returned to work from a doctor's appointment and found drawings from her third-graders guessing where she'd gone.

Burke, of Ramsey, said she usually tells her Richard E. Byrd School students when she's going to be absent but didn't have time to warn them about Wednesday's rescheduled appointment.

"I thought that it's great that they know me like I know them," said Burke, an athlete at Good Energy Training in Allendale.

"I guess they know that sometimes I walk funny because I am sore from my workouts," she said, pointing to 8-year-old Margi Nolfo's drawing that depicts her at the gym. The third-grader has taken drawing lessons with her neighbor and "Popeye" cartoonist, Hy Eisman.

Margi also knows Burke as her older sister's running coach with Heart and Sole ( SEE: Glen Rock Teachers Coach Running Program For Girls ).

"That's probably where the association of Mrs. Burke working out came from," said Margi's mom, Moira Nolfo. "Margi is draws constantly and gives Mrs. Burke a picture every day."

"Making meaningful connections with my students is important to me," Burke said. "I'm human to them."
