GLEN ROCK, N.J. — What started as a school project turned into a rewarding experience for Glen Rock resident Jocelyn Greer.
The 15-year-old sophomore at Bergen County Academy needs to collect birthday supplies for five underprivileged children.Greer's group project started as a research assignment to find real issues facing society. He and his teammates consulted the Social Service Association of Ridgewood, which connected them with four girls and one boy between the ages of 4 to 10 .
"It's really cool for me," Greer told Daily Voice. "I've never really done something like this where it's just me and a few other people forming our own project. I've maybe done things with teachers or other adults but here it's just us."
Greer needs to collect cards, streamers, cups, balloons, hats, cake mix and gifts for her project. She will be collecting through Dec. 10 and said she saw a fast response already with people trying to help.
Many items have come in but some specific needs include small toys, wrapping paper, frosting and candles, Greer said.
Greer has lived in Glen Rock her whole life. She plays softball and guitar in her free time. Now that she's had a taste of volunteering she said it's something she would like to continue.
"It's so clear to me that, of course, it takes work," she said, "but it's so easy to help out in any way."
