GLEN ROCK, N.J. — Some of the screams coming from the Central School gymnasium Friday night blared from speakers, but others were real.
Each stop in a haunted house display represented a different part of town.
"It's called 'Walking Dead Rock'," co-organizer Cindy Ribecca said. "It's noisy, scary and bloody."
Kilroy's market became "Kill Roy's."
Starbucks transformed into "Scare-bucks."
The Curious Reader bookstore? "Curious Bleeder."
Adults and youngsters dressed in ghoulish makeup popped out at passersby to deliver scares.
Some children came in costume, with the likes of Buzz Lightyear, Batman and Elsa from "Frozen" making appearances.
Preparations began in June for the haunted house event, a fundraiser for the fifth-grade class.
Jessie Lipson said she thought the combination of the downtown shopping and frights was phenomenal.
Another parent, Rob Lopez, said his children were scared but thrilled.
"They were much more into it beforehand," Lopez said. "Then we got in there. They were thinking they were a lot braver than they actually were.
"The moms, dads and the kids do a great job."
